PUF Field Joint Insulation for Underground Chilled Water Pipelines Abu Dhabi
PSEMIC provides field joint insulation solutions for underground chilled-water pipelines, pipes, fittings and flanged connections using polyurethane foam (PUF) insulation and external waterproof sealing systems.
Our work covers surface preparation, protective coating, mould installation, PUF filling, heat-shrink sealing, waterproofing and final joint protection before underground reinstatement. Where the pipeline includes an existing Leak Detection System (LDS), we can maintain its continuity and include LDS testing and commissioning within the project scope.
Restoring Insulation Continuity at Underground Pipe Joints
Field joints are created wherever pre-insulated chilled-water pipes, fittings or components are connected on site. These areas require insulation and waterproof protection to restore continuity between the factory-insulated pipe sections.
PSEMIC carries out PUF field joint insulation for underground chilled-water pipelines using site-applied polyurethane foam together with protective external sealing systems.
The objective is to maintain thermal performance, protect the steel pipeline and reduce the possibility of moisture entering the joint area after burial.

A Field Joint Is More Than Filling a Gap With Foam
Underground chilled-water systems operate in conditions where insulation continuity and moisture protection are important. A poorly sealed joint can compromise thermal performance and expose the pipeline area to moisture.
Thermal Insulation Continuity
PUF insulation restores the insulated section between adjoining pre-insulated pipeline components.
Waterproof Protection
The external sealing layer helps protect the insulated joint from groundwater and moisture ingress.
Pipeline Protection
Proper preparation and joint protection help maintain the integrity of buried chilled-water piping systems.
How PUF Field Joint Insulation Is Carried Out
The actual project photographs below show the typical sequence followed during underground chilled-water field joint insulation works.

Joint Exposure & Initial Condition
The pipe joint is exposed and checked before insulation works begin. Adequate working access is maintained around the connection so that surface preparation and insulation activities can be completed properly.

Surface Preparation & Protective Coating
The exposed steel surface is cleaned and prepared. Dirt, loose material, moisture and other contaminants are removed before the applicable protective coating is completed.

Aluminium Mould Installation
A temporary aluminium mould is installed around the joint section. The mould provides the required enclosure for forming the PUF insulation around the exposed joint.

PUF Filling & Insulation Formation
Polyurethane foam material is introduced into the prepared moulded cavity. The foam expands within the enclosed area to form the insulation around the pipe joint and restore insulation continuity.

Heat-Shrink Sleeve Application
After completion of the insulation stage, the external waterproofing system is installed over the joint. The heat-shrinkable sleeve forms a continuous protective covering around the insulated section.

Completed Field Joint Waterproofing
The completed waterproofing system is checked for continuity and finish before the underground pipeline is released for subsequent inspection and reinstatement activities.

Flange & Fitting Insulation
Field insulation is not limited to straight pipe joints. Similar insulation and waterproof protection can be applied around suitable flanged connections, fittings and other pipeline components.

Completed Underground Field Joint
The completed insulated and waterproofed joint provides a protected transition between the adjoining pre-insulated pipeline sections before final underground reinstatement.

PUF Insulation Combined With Waterproof Sealing
The insulation and external waterproofing system perform different functions but work together as one field-joint solution.
PUF restores the thermal insulation around the exposed pipe connection, while the external heat-shrink or waterproofing system protects the insulated joint from the surrounding underground environment.
The exact field-joint arrangement depends on pipe size, fitting geometry, project specification and the existing pre-insulated piping system.
Field Joint Insulation While Maintaining the Existing LDS System
Some pre-insulated chilled-water pipeline systems are supplied with an integrated Leak Detection System (LDS). Where an LDS is already installed by the pipe manufacturer or project supplier, PSEMIC can execute the field joint insulation works while maintaining continuity of the existing leak-detection arrangement.
LDS Continuity During Field Joint Works
The field joint is prepared so the existing leak-detection wires, sensors or monitoring components are identified and protected during insulation and waterproofing activities.
LDS Commissioning Can Be Included in PSEMIC Scope
Where the project specification requires the leak-detection system to remain active, PSEMIC can coordinate the field-joint insulation works without compromising the existing monitoring arrangement and can include LDS testing and commissioning as part of the completion activities.
This is especially useful on underground pre-insulated CHW networks where the client requires future monitoring for moisture ingress or insulation-system faults.
Note: The exact connection, testing and commissioning method will follow the installed LDS manufacturer requirements, approved project drawings and client specification.

PUF Field Joint Insulation for Underground CHW Pipelines
What is field joint insulation?
Field joint insulation is the site-applied insulation and external protection installed around pipeline connections that are left exposed when pre-insulated pipe sections or fittings are joined.
Why is PUF used for underground chilled-water pipeline joints?
Polyurethane foam provides thermal insulation around the joint and can be formed on site to match the surrounding pre-insulated pipeline.
Why is waterproofing required after PUF insulation?
PUF provides the insulation layer, while the external waterproof system helps prevent moisture from entering the insulated joint after underground reinstatement.
Can fittings and flanges also be insulated?
Yes. Depending on the project design and specification, field insulation can be applied around suitable pipe fittings, flanged connections, reducers and other underground chilled-water components.
Does PSEMIC provide field joint insulation in Abu Dhabi?
PSEMIC undertakes field joint insulation and associated chilled-water pipeline works in Abu Dhabi and other UAE project locations depending on project requirements.
Can the existing Leak Detection System (LDS) remain operational after field joint insulation?
Yes, where an LDS is already incorporated into the pre-insulated pipeline system, the field joint can be executed while protecting and maintaining the existing LDS arrangement. PSEMIC can also include LDS testing and commissioning after completion, subject to the installed system, manufacturer requirements and project specification.
